FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
STAMFORD, Conn., March 21, 2003 - Pitney Bowes Inc. (NYSE:PBI) hosted Grammy-award winning musician and producer Nile Rodgers at their headquarters recently for the Distinguished Speaker Series the company holds for its employees.
Rodgers founded the musical group Chic along with his late partner Bernard Edwards in 1977. He has gone on to write and produce hits for artists ranging from Diana Ross to David Bowie to Madonna. His work as an artist, producer, and songwriter has amounted to sales of over 100 million records.
Following the events of 9/11, Rodgers felt compelled to take on a project to promote tolerance and peace - the We Are Family Project. Within two weeks of the tragedy, he brought together 200 celebrities to re-record his world re-known song "We Are Family." Later, he gathered 100 famous children's characters to record the song and create a music video. Pitney Bowes invited him to speak to its employees so he could share his thoughts on tolerance. |

Henry Hernandez, Jr., executive director, Global Diversity Leadership, said many employees came because they were fans of Rodgers' music. "Encouraging people to be more tolerant will be another important component of Nile's legacy. Hearing that message from Nile was even more meaningful for this audience and exposing them to diverse opinions is what this speaker series is all about." |
Rodgers had a difficult childhood. He moved around a lot so he was always the new kid, usually the only black kid and constantly picked on. When a teacher reached out to him and gave him a flute of his own, it turned his life around. "That gesture changed my entire vantage point. It made me feel like I belonged and that the world was a safer place."
Rodgers founded the We Are Family Foundation to support existing programs that promote tolerance and to initiate programs that educate people of all ages about it.
"Through our foundation, we hope to provide parents, teachers and children with the tools to help start discussions about the importance of diversity, understanding, and acceptance," Rodgers said. More information about the We Are Family Foundation can be found on www.wearefamilyfoundation.org.
