We Are Family Foundation

WAFF created the We Are Family Schools Initiative in partnership with Building with Books in 2003, with the purpose of building schools in illiterate nations and building bridges between cultures by sending U.S. high school students on a "trek" to help build the schools.

Since the initiative began in 2003, WAFF has funded 14 We Are Family Schools and six student treks.

To date, 12 schools have been completed - ten in Mali, Africa and one in Maderas Negras, Nicaragua. The remaining two schools will be completed by early 2008 in Mali, Africa and Malawi, Africa.

To date, approximately 100 U.S. high school students have participated in an overseas two-week "trek". Each "trekkie" lives with a family in the village while helping the villagers build the foundation to their new school.
