Project: Youth STEM Matters

At 14-years-old, Anne-Rosa joined a youth research journal, eventually becoming Head of Editorial. She witnessed discrimination from the leadership team, who fought against publishing a diverse representation of scientists. Anne-Rosa knew intolerance had no place in the scientific community, and young people deserved to be in an inclusive environment that fostered their potential. She resigned from her position and along with friends, created a new space for young scientists. In March 2020, they launched Youth STEM Matters – an international platform for young researchers to share their findings, ideas, and innovations. Youth STEM Matters goes beyond the basic review process. They work with each submitter to approach their article through the lens of the UN Sustainable Development Goals to maximize the potential impact of their findings. All articles address a UN Sustainable Development Goal(s) and are peer reviewed by a team of 70 young volunteers in 17 countries. In June and October 2021, Youth STEM Matters hosted two research conferences, where 400+ attendees from 45+ countries heard from professional experts and young innovators, shared their own findings, and engaged in interactive conversations. What makes Youth STEM Matters most proud is the supportive, diverse environment they have created, with submissions from 82+ countries. Anne-Rosa is currently developing in-person STEM workshops that will adapt to a variety of communities and cultures around the world and provide equitable opportunities for future young leaders. She believes every young person can impact the scientific community towards a more sustainable future.
