Project: Plantitia Power
Focus Area: Food Justice

Steph is an Ecuadorian PapiFemme. Raised on Bacon Egg and Cheese sandwiches in Queens, New York, Steph has found their home and community within Washington, DC.

Steph founded Plantita Power after feeling misgendered and limited in local urban gardening spaces. Planita Power is a national food and body liberation movement that focuses on QTBIPOC individuals, as well as people with disabilities and limited English proficiency. Planita Power works to heal these communities by bridging resources, centering language justice, and providing tools to grow gardens in all types of spaces. At the local level, they share practices and concepts on food preservation, socio-solidarity based economy, the liberation of our bodies, and achieving food sovereignty. Their seedling program is currently in 8 states: Washington, DC, Maryland, Virginia, New York, Rhode Island, Florida, California and South Dakota.

Plantita Power’s work is rooted in the belief that we all carry our ancestors in our hands.
