WANGO IVONE PAMELA

KENYA, 21

Project:  FEDWEN
Focus Area: Disability Justice

Ivone is a liberal, feminist and humanitarian, passionate about community development and improving the quality of life for others. She is particularly invested in the wellbeing of women, children and people with disabilities, having been raised by a single mother who is deaf.

Ivone is the Youth Coordinator of Federation of Deaf Women Empowerment Network-Kenya (FEDWEN-Kenya) – a women-led organization working to enrich the lives of deaf females in Kenya. FEDWED aims to build a barrier-free society, where all deaf women and girls enjoy equal rights to excel in society. Their key focus areas of advocacy include sexual health and rights, equal access to information and resources, gender-based violence, as well as the education and economic empowerment of deaf women.

FEDWEN advocates for comprehensive sexual education for adolescents who can make informed decisions about their sexuality, and practice safety to reduce the rate of STIs and teen pregnancies. And since women with disabilities are at a higher risk for intimate partner violence, they work to empower women to recognize and ensure their access to first responders.

Ivone is currently a fourth year Psychology student at Moi University and a Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) alumnus.

“We find that the deaf only interact with people when they are at schools...they are very isolated when they are at home.”
