JATO SONITA

CAMEROON, 17

She/Her

Project: The Forest Children of Africa

During frequent military attacks, Jato would flee to the forest, where she experienced firsthand nature's profound ability to provide. At 13, this inspired her to establish The Forest Children of Africa, an initiative using art and storytelling to advocate for forest conservation in Cameroon. The Forest Children write and perform original advocacy music and support young artists in creating art that inspires sustainability. They also lead restoration initiatives and awareness campaigns in schools and communities. Jato has released 9 songs, garnered 300,000+ social media followers, and reached 1,000,000 people through various media. In 2024, she represented Cameroon at the Congo Basin Conclave, performing her music LIVE and contributing to conversations with global leaders. Jato plans to continue uplifting youth voices and nurturing a generation committed to protecting the nature that has always protected her.
