Project: ReRoot.ED
Focus Area: Education Reform & Justice

Akhera is a community organizer and the co-founder of Reroot.ED – a campaign fighting for an anti-racist, inclusive curriculum in secondary schools across the United Kingdom. Akhera and her co-founder Sam Koffi launched Reroot.ED during their time at The Advocacy Academy’s Social Justice Leadership Fellowship.

Reroot.ED’s mission is to encourage all teachers in the UK to become allies for justice and equity in education. As Black students, the Reroot.ED team works to eradicate experiences of erasure and disengagement felt by marginalized students in the classroom. In doing so they put students who experience marginalization at the center of creating solutions. Combining bottom-up programs with top-down curriculum change, Reroot.ED’s ultimate goal is an anti-racist education system in the UK, which supports an entirely inclusive approach to learning.

“Britain looks at its history of empire as this amazing, great thing… that is erasure of the experiences of this empire for people of color.”
