ARTHUR LIMA

BRAZIL, 28

Project: AfroSaúde
Focus Area: HealthCare

Arthur is the founder and CEO of AfroSaúde – an initiative aiming to equalize healthcare access for Afro-Brazilians. As an Afro-Brazilian dentist in the city of Salvador, Brazil, Arthur is familiar with the structural racism within Brazil’s healthcare system. After working for years in public health, Arthur decided to be an agent of change in the fight against systemic racism in healthcare.

In July 2019, he and his partner Igor Leonardo created AfroSaúde, which started as a database of healthcare professionals in Brazil. AfroSaúde connects patients with 550+ medical professionals who can adequately treat them with high quality care. Arthur and his team also launched a free helpline during the COVID-19 pandemic and a website to provide mental health and wellness resources. Beyond their services, AfroSaúde generates important conversations on a national scale about racism in healthcare.

Arthur is working towards his Master’s degree in Health and Environment at the Federal University of Bahia. He will continue to grow AfroSaúde, raise awareness about the health of the Black population in Brazil and heighten visibility of Black healthcare professionals. Arthur believes there is much more to be done to tackle racism in the Brazilian society.

“I started to think what if I could build a place where people could find Black doctors, dentists, nutritionists, and psychologists.”
